EM patch plan Validation fails at OPatch check step

I am running the Validation of a (database) Patch Plan and the OPatch check step fails with:

Step: CheckIfOPatchIsLatest (Succeeded)

Start Date 2018.04.24 15:55:08

Completed Date 2018.04.24 15:55:08

Targets OraDB12Home1_8_machine-name.our-company.com

[WARN] The OPatch version of the OPatch component is null.

[WARN] An error occurred while checking for OPatch version. OPatch will be upgraded.

[INFO] The OPatch patch stage location is: "%emd_emstagedir%/p6880880_600000000101374_2000_0/oracle"

I've manually updated OPatch and checked that it runs without issue from the server command line.

I'm sure there's a simple solution but I'm not able to find it in MOS.
