Why so many flashback logs

Asking here since Flashback is in the Backup Docs.

11204, Ent Ed on OEL 6 Data Guard, one physical standby

App team did a patch the other day that caused so many archivelogs we ran out of space and the db froze. This was solved and the app went back to normal.

Now in the FRA we still have (lots of) logs from the same day that they did the patch, yet our db_flashback_retention_target is 24 hours. Tried setting this param lower with no reduction in flashback logs.

The reason that this is an issue is due to monitoring in place for the FRA filesystem. It never goes down below 80% so we have alerts (and we never had alerts before because we never had such an activity).
