Automate Sending 855 (EDI) Order Acknowledgments

Back in the mid-2000s I automated sending 855 order acknowledgments using the subsystem.  Except for needing an occasional restart and the discovery of a bug after our 9.0 go-live (now fixed!), it worked really well.

Now I'm at a new company setting up 855 order acknowledgments.  I'm wondering if there are any alternatives to the subsystem, or the scheduler for automating 855s?

What are other companies using in 2018 that I didn't think about 12-15 years ago?  Is the subsystem still a good option?
