EBS 11i to R12.2 upgrade : Character set

Hello,

We are currently in EBS 11i and planning to upgrade to R12.2.7.    The current character set is UTF8.     We would like to go to  AL32UTF8  after the upgrade.       While laying out the R12.2 filesystem,   I will select AL32UTF8 as the character set.

My question is do we need to update the Database characterset  to AL32UTF8 before upgrade or after upgrade or keep the same

Please advise
