Excel SmartView backward compatibility with Essbase and HFM

I am running Hyperion Essbase and HFM version 11.1.2.4 and we have SmartView 11.1.2.5.520 installed for our users who connect to Essbase and HFM.

My users have recently upgraded to 32-bit Microsoft Office/Excel 2016 and all are using 64 bit Windows 7.  Some of my "power users" are experiencing stability problems with Excel crashing periodically.  I'm not sure it is related to SmartView, but it is a common item between the users.  In order to do the first steps of good IT troubleshooting, I would like to get my users on the latest (or most stable) version of SmartView.  Can I upgrade SmartView that without upgrading the backend databases and Foundation Services?
