Can some vanilla fields be inactivated

We have so many unneeded joins and MVLs in Action BC. This is causing performance issues. We want to inactivate them, however some of them are vanilla fields. I would like to know if we can go ahead and inactivate them or Oracle does not recommend modifications to "ANY" vanilla fields.
