Un-approving a load with a canceled shipment

Scenario: Sales Order went through back-order process at the time of pick ticket generation. This caused the original shipment on the sales order detail to be canceled. Prior to the back-order release the load that was containing the shipment did not get unapproved.

Unable to removed the canceled shipment from the load due to it being approved, unable to un-approve because shipment is canceled. Is there a way around this without changing the protected load status?
