Patching multiple nodes without a shared APPL_TOP

We have a multi-node 12.1.3 configuration with a shared APPL_TOP on our internal servers and separate file systems on our external servers.  When patching, the database driver is still running on the external zones.  My question is if I can patch the internal zones with the entire app down and then have the app running on the internal zones while patching the external zones.  The external zones just run the web services (used for HR Self-Service and iSupplier).  Can I run adpatch with options=nodatabaseportion and hotpatch so the internal app can be available while patching the external nodes?
