Missing Favorites

I hope this is in the right community.  If not, lease move.

I have a single user who's Favorites are no longer displaying on the left side of the screen.  Recent Reports and Open applications are still displayed, and he still has access to his Favorites via the star at the top of the screen.  How can he get his favorites back on the left of the screen, and what might he have done to cause them to disappear?
