Exadata: System Crash or Hang Showing 100% CPU Utilization on Background Process: apx_vi00_+APX1

Symptoms

Exadata system may crash or hang with 100% CPU utilization on background process apx_vi00_+

Look to:  Exawatcher top logs (/opt/oracle.ExaWatcher/archive/Top.ExaWatcher) to see if apx_vi00_+APX1 is up to 100% CPU in few seconds and Node is hung after this occurrence.

apx_vi00_+APX1 is an Exadata specific background process for ACFS:

Look to:   OS messages file (/var/log/messages) to see if there are reports of stalls on tasks:

Cause

This issue is caused by an Oracle code defect involving I/Os on ACFS volumes of stripe size 64K.

Solution

For a solution, contact Oracle Support Services for a merge patch for the bugs 27962890, 28344432 and 28376306 on top of your current Grid Infrastructure PSU version.
