Does "crosscheck" apply if you're not using a catalog?

SuSE Linux 11 x86-64

Oracle DB 12.1.0.2 EE

Is there any benefit to issuing "crosscheck archivelog all" (or any crosscheck command) if you are not using a recovery catalog?   Doesn't it validate physical reality of backups against the backup info in the controlfile when not using a catalog?
