DB_UNIQUE_NAME of DATAGUARD

i have searched for this attribute on metelink,and i found that such consequences followed:

1.the db_unique_name ins case-insensitive

2.the db_unique_name is optional for dataguard

3.this parameter needs to be specified in the solution for resolvable gap in dataguard (document id 876681.1)

so i got the problem:

should i  set the parameter in DG configuration?

and can i use the uppercase and lowercase of db_unique_name to distinguish the primary and standby database ?
