Oracle 2 Node RAC connection failover

Hi,

With a 2 Node Oracle RAC, with SCAN Ip configured.

if I shutdown node1 for upgrade (or whatever reason) would the connection to that Node1 be automatically failed over to Node2, or we will see a connection error in our application and we have to manually restart the application to connect to RAC (node2) again?
