Can standard cost be broken out into additional material cost types?

There is a requirement to see standard costs by type of material, not just one big A1 bucket.  I know the A1, A2 cost types are hard coded but there is a suggestion in document 634859.1 that indicates cost types E-Z could be used to further break out the material costs.  However, there is nothing in the BOM that would allow components to be assigned a specific cost type. We thought about treating them like an X-cost where we would reduce the A1 material cost with one X-cost type and add it back in with another.  Is anyone else breaking out material costs at additional levels of detail? And if so, how?
