'ORA-29760 when trying to start single instance rac database

A two instance Database has recently been switched to single instance DB.  ( Linux )

When trying to startup, getting the error:

SQL> startup mount pfile=/u01/app/oracle/admin/LNGP29U/pfile/initLNGP29U.ora

ORA-29760: instance_number parameter not specified

SQL>

Following params set in the pfile:

LNGP29U1.instance_number=1

LNGP29U2.instance_number=2
