Release draft invoices en masse

A customer wants help to release draft invoices en masse. They have 40,000 to do on a regular basis.  The Oracle form is obviously not up to this task as they have to be done one by one.  Anyone know of a public (or decent private) API for this ?

I know there is an extension, but I want to know if there is another way to do this.
