How does underscore in QBE work?

How does the underscore wildcard in the QBE work?  (Apps 9.0.2, Tools 9.1.5.5) Is an asterisk required when using the underscore wildcard?

For example, I've noticed that if I'm on Address Book Revisions (P01012 W01012B) looking for a record with the Alpha Name "Marketing Company", I get these results:

  • Searching for Marketing Company finds the record
  • Searching for Marketing _ompany does not find the record
  • Searching for Marketing _ompany* or *Marketing _ompany finds the record

Is there any documentation that explains this?
