Agreements and Sales Order Entry

Hello,

I'm relatively new to agreements.  My company has been using them but we lost our IT resource that understood the process.  This may be a simple question - what date on the sales order is used to locate an agreement?  And is that something that can be changed?

We are on tools and apps 8.12
