Free Goods for configured items

Is there any additional set up required when setting up a free good adjustment for a configured item? 

I ran through a sales order on a configured item, worked fine. 

I then set up the free goods adjustment on the parent item.  Now, when I enter an order for the configured item, on the configuration screen I immediately get "invalid configuration" and "Error: open for table &1 failed" messages. 

I've checked MOS and wasn't able to find an answer, so anything you could offer would be most appreciated.
