oradim options and registry keys

I've never really looked at this before, but in trying to set up a Win-2012 server under VBox, to mimic one of my live servers I've had to start exploring this a bit more.

Looking at the options for oradim, we see this:

-STARTMODE auto | manual indicates whether to start
     the instance when the Oracle Database service is started. The default is manual.

I had always assumed that '-startmode' mapped to the Windows service property of 'startup type'  (selecting 'properties' for the selected database service from the Windows Services control panel).  But on closer reading it says whether to start the
