What would keep a partition that normally auto extends from auto extending?

Our company that is a retail company recently got hit with the Black Friday load on our system, we use Fusion Middleware. While running, the AUDIT_TRAIL table's partition threw errors about not having space. We reviewed that there was disk and table space available, but the partition did not auto extend like it had in the past when needed. Hoping someone may have some insight on what may have caused the auto extend to fail this time.
