Pros and Cons of including soft commits in Item Availability calculation

We went live on JDE E1 9.2 and we are getting lots of backorders and Items with Negative Availability. We are using Transportation and we are not using Future Commit. I see that the Availability Calculation subtracts soft commits as well as hard commits from item availability on all our branches. We are a true distributor, no manufacturing. Backordered sales lines seem to cause a lot of issues with our CSR's in terms of getting all items on an order onto the same shipment for approving shipment and producing a pick slip for our external public warehouses.
