Delete/Edit Field Requirement

I've created a new field in my Oracle CRM On Demand application and I accidentally made it required.  I have removed the check box for "required", but it is still being required by the system.  I tried removing it from the Page Layout, but since it is a red, required field, it is making me put it back into the layout. 

I can't see a way to delete the field so I can re-create without the requirement, so now I'm stuck with this required field that should not actually be required.  How do I fix the issue?
