Mixed Mode Auditing

We are starting to use Unified Auditing in 12.2.  We have to write records to syslog so we are using mixed mode auditing.  Do unified policies in mixed mode write to the unified_audit_trail table and syslog or do we need to leave all the old auditing in place to get records to syslog?
