How can we end date life events that have been used in the past

There are several life events which are no longer used and we need to end date them. But when we try to end date those life event reasons, the system throws an error:

"APP-BEN-91024: This record is already used by at least one Eligible Person record. You cannot delete this record until the related Eligible Person records are deleted"

I understand that the system is throwing this error to prevent having orphan rows in the eligibility tables. But how can we end date life events that have been used in the past but are no longer required?

We cannot delete the old person records for whom those life events are processed as that is relevant history which needs to be retained.
