Appliance upgrade to 18.3

We are going through a project that started as an Applicance 12 version but looks more sensible as an 18.3 version.

Put simply - is there an upgrade process for our pre-production version 12 Appliance?

If a reimage of 18.3 is required what is the process for retaining / restoring the database that we have?

I have done some digging but not seen anything that covers the database side of a reimage.
