Can the Intercompany Segment (converted Future Segment) have more characters than the Company Segmen

We've been live for about a year now and looking into using a Future segment as the Intercompany segment.  However the current Company segment is only 2 characters but the Future segment is 4 characters (with only the value 0000 being used thus far).

Since it is not recommended to decrease the segment length once in Production, any thoughts on how we can accomplish this task without having to redo the entire COA?
