Authenticating Oracle database access centrally through Kerberos Active Directory Authentication

We know that the "Centrally Managed Users" feature available in Oracle 18C EE will make it easier to set up AD authentication to Oracle databases without an immediate directory service; looks like this may be responding to customers complaining it is difficult to set up on the older versions

Unfortuately we will be stuck on Oracle 12 Standard Edition for the foreseeable future:  has anyone out there experience of getting AD authentication to work prior to 18C on EE or SE?

what were the challenges; does it work reliably and are there single-point-of-failure issues?

can anyone point us to some links to guides/use-cases out there?
