Performance of APEX developed Applications

APEX is seen what MS Access is for Microsoft.It is quite easy to quickly develop the applications with very basic skills of PLSQL, DB Knowledge and intelligence of using the right built ins.

However I see there is an issue with performance as the code is written directly on top of the Database. Are there any tips and techniques to make the APEX based applications more robust with high performance?
