In the Item Master I can rename the item?

I am able to rename the item (not the description) and it is still allowed. All transactions related to the item also reflect the new name. What is the logic of allowing this functionality? How can we track the old transactions which happened in the old name which customers and suppliers will be still hodling in their records?
