Difference between asset category and asset attributes

Hi,

I couldn't get any place to enter or setup asset category related information, however if I opt category option from asset search window I am getting attribute group name (which I defined in Inventory -> DFF Segments).

I am confuse between asset 'category' and asset 'attribute' (appearing on asset detail page - for reference screen shot attached).    

Would you please share what is the difference between them ?
