Promoting Objects on 2 different Tools Releases

I have a customer who has DV/PY on new TR 9.2.2.7 and Production on 9.2.0.3.  Can we still promote objects from DV through to PD with no issue?  I always thought you could not do that because of the different tools release in Production.  Is there documentation that gives best practices for this scenario and the reason behind it?
