What is the difference between approval through TL_APPRV_AE and online approval

What is the difference between approval through TL_APPRV_AE and online approval through Manager Self Service >> Time Management >> Approve Time and Exceptions >> Payable Time ?

As the online approval through Manager Self Service is taking longer time, can we replace it by running the Batch Process TL_APPRV_AE.
