Asset Number numeric

My understanding is that the Asset Number in JDE must be numeric.  Does this Asset Number also need to be an integer, e.g. 1234?  Or could I also define the number as a decimal, e.g. 1234.01, 1234.02, etc?   If a decimal format is valid, is there a maximum number of digits available to the right of the decimal point?   Also, is there a maximum size to the asset number...I believe I saw "8 digits" but wanted to confirm.   Thanks.
