Error applying patch changes to database

I have tried several times to apply a patch, but it never applies. I run the ./datapatch -verbose command and things start off fine and connects to the database without any problem, but then after a couple of minutes I get

"Bootstrap timed out after 120 seconds". Things hang for about 2 hours and then the same bootstrap message appears. After a couple of minutes the datapatch command ends with the following message:

Prereq check failed, exiting without installing any patches.
