ASM Imbalance

Hi,

My company is currently running a mission critical application Oracle database in VMware. The RDBMS is Oracle 12R1 (12.1.x.x) with ASM on RHEL 7.x. The issue as I understand it is we have reached a maximum number of I/O path VMware provided for ASM diskgroup. The VMDK is maxed out. Each ASM Disk is provisioned with 500 GB disk (/dev/sd*). We had over 68 disks in ASM (32 disks for data and remaining for redundancy). We can no longer add more disk to ASM while the database is growing at a rapid rate >1 TB per month.

In an effort to get more storage (disk) to ASM the storage team created a larger disk (LUN) size to 1 TB. Coupled with the fact we ran out of storage in the backend there is little room to carve out new 1 TB disk. As new 1 TB disk get added and ASM rebalanced, the 2x500 GB is dropped.

Howdy, Stranger!
