End Dating and Element Link in HRMS

We are looking to remove elements from use in a particular payroll.  These elements are no longer used by our organization, and there are no future entries on any records.  Is the best way to remove these elements to end date the element link?  Are there any other steps we should take? Additionally, will end-dating the element link cause any issues with fast formulas?
