Use of RMA process with Production Number controlled items

Is there anyone that has used RMA's with Production Number controlled items? According to the Project Manufacturing implementation guide, RMA integration is not supported. However, I haven't seen any other documentation on why the integration is not supported. Initial testing of creating an RMA against a Production Number controlled item seems to work fine, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
