Why does Quantity Ordered on Component item goe negative after attaching a substitute component?

I have a substitute item setup on a BOM.  After attaching the parts list, I Row Exit to Substitutes Available and choose a substitute item.  The Substitute item attaches to the parts list correctly however the quantity ordered on the original component item has gone negative rather than blanking out.  Why is that?  Is something setup wrong?
