Modify an XML template for ACH - inserting field does not include 'path'

I am modifying an XML template (Generic US NACHA aka IBYDE_N_US_en.rtf), and I am having trouble inserting a new field using the BI Publisher plug-in for Word.

When I insert the field numerous different ways and test, I get zeroes or blanks instead of the field value.  It appears that the field is not recognized.

Is there a trick to inserting/replacing a field in an rtf file?
