Is there any impact to adding a new Learning Component Type in ELM?

Is there any impact to adding a new Learning Component Type in ELM?  We are noticing that when we manually update a learner's course status for a course that did not use a delivered component type, their program status goes into warning.  However, when we use a delivered type, it does not.  Our administrator is tracking the course status for a course where the learner has the option to take it via ELM (online) or outside of ELM via another application.  She would like to manage the enrollments in one place oppose to tracking the learning done outside of ELMS
