Delete unused serial numbers

A user created a series of serial numbers for ITEM-A that were xx-xxxx-xxxxx but have no decided to go with a different naming convention xxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx. The original serial number are all defined not used. Is there a way to delete these from the system so that they are no longer available to be used etc?
