Relate - How to sign up for Loyalty program without a physical card?

Hello all,

Is there a way to signup customers for a points  based loyalty program without having to assign\swipe  a physical card that is associated with the loyalty account?

The company is overhauling the loyalty program. As part of that we are also considering the environmental impact of hundreds of thousands of cards that are given out on a yearly basis. The aim is to work the loyalty program using the customer's phone number.
