Regarding the upcoming change, in release 9.1, to expand the tax_class field from 1 to 3 characters

Regarding the upcoming change, in release 9.1, to expand the tax_class field from 1 to 3 characters in length.  Will the existing tax_class values be preserved?  We have customizations that refer to the existing values and need to know if we should plan for changes.
