Item Master rationalization

Dear All ,

We need to embark on an exercise to rationalize the Item master especially item code .Following areas need to be looked into

1.Follow the same Item master , across the instance , as some items have different item codes for the same items, accross OU's and Inventory Organization

2.Make defunct the same items which are old ,unused and duplicate.Any ideas or pointers to achieve this would be of great help.
