Garnishment Rule Changes State of Washington effective 7/28/19
Any word on new law for the state of WA effective on 7/28/19. This would be a change to the rules table. The new law changes the exemption percentage from the current 75 to 80 or 35 times the state minimum wage.
Here is the law breakdown: Effective, July 29, 2019, the amount of wages exempt from garnishment based on judgments or orders to collect consumer debt will increase to the greater of either 80% of disposable earnings, or (2) 35 times the state minimum wage.
The 2019 state minimum wage is $12.00/hour. As such, the exempt amount of garnishments for consumer debt will be the greater of either 80% of disposable earnings, or (ii) $420/week (35*$12). Effective, January 1, 2020, the state minimum wage will increase to $13.50/hour, meaning that the exempt amount of garnishments for consumer debts will be the greater of either:
