Can EBS snapshot (or AMI) be used as backup of Oracle ASM database in AWS? Does database and ASM in

I have a very large Oracle ASM database in AWS EC2 and am looking into creating routine AMI's or EBS snapshots as an additional backup.  Does the Oracle database and ASM instance need to be down to create the AMI or EBS snapshot?  or can the database be placed in backup mode to create the AMI or EBS snapshot?
