Sales Rebates

Hi

Is there a way rebates can be paid to customer on a sales order. We have a situation where a customer is paid rebate not at fixed rate. For instance, a customer can be paid 10 dollars as rebates for one order and the same customer can be paid 20 dollars for another  order on same day.

How can we achieve this using rebates functionality. Any thoughts appreciated
