Why do label only parent accounts have values in Smart View?

I set up three parent accounts which are set as label only. All three are KPI accounts I don't want to aggregate up the tree. When I retrieve the account hierarchy via Smart View, each of these three parents has a value. It's the same value as the first child account (the member in the next lower level). What could be causing this?
