Need expert answer on seperate ports for managed server in RUN and PATCH editions

Dear Experts,

We only start the managed servers either from run edition or from patch edition right?Then why do we need seperate ports for the managed servers in run and patch filesystems?

Will they run parallely in any adop operation?
